ST ALBERT MINERS LACROSSE
The Miners Lacrosse Club
The Miners Lacrosse Club was formed in 1985 by its founder Tom McCaskill to offer the opportunity to younger lacrosse players to play at an elite level. At that time there were few places in Alberta where players could have that kind of experience. This was only the beginnings of any type of junior lacrosse in Alberta and so steps were taken to play both inside and outside of Alberta.
The Miners developed both a Junior B and Senior B program, however the Senior B program was dropped for a number of years. In 1995, the Jr. B Miners attended a national championship and surprised everyone in Canada with a silver medal performance. The Founders Cup (Jr. B National Championship) has been dominated by Ontario but in 1999 the Miners were the second non Ontario team ever to win the championship and the first to do so in Ontario. In 2009 the executive recognized the need to add another Sr. B team to the Alberta league and resurrected the Sr. B program. In the second year of the program they were provincial champions and won it again in 2011.
The Miners have always believed in lacrosse in Alberta and recognize the importance of developing our youth. We are pleased to see so many of our alumni giving back to the game, by coaching, reffing or volunteering. We are now looking forward to seeing the second generation of Miners coming into the Miner system. This is how traditions are built. The prospect of working with these young athletes is very exciting.
